As bride stylists and wedding day dressers , my team and I travel all over the world with our couples helping them to look their best on their wedding day. We spend hours prepping the bride’s look as well as the garments of her wedding party and the entire family. We know a thing or two about ensuring that everyone feels confident walking down the aisle and looks amazing in their wedding photos, especially the bride in her wedding dress.

If you have not hired a bridal stylist to take care of all of the wedding attire prep for you, it is important that you learn these tips to take care of your wedding day garments. After all of the traveling for a destination wedding or transporting your wedding dress from the bridal store to the wedding morning suite, you’ll need to give your wedding dress a little refresh before its trip down the aisle.

It is common for wedding dresses, as well as garments and outfits for bridesmaids, wedding party members, and families, to need attention and steaming on the wedding day to remove wrinkles and creases from the garments. After all, everyone will have their picture taken on the wedding day, and you want all parties - including the couple - to look and feel their best.

Don’t forget to check out Brides.com for a complete article on steaming your wedding dress from expert bridal stylist Beth Chapman.

Here are our secrets to a smooth and polished your wedding day look without wrinkles or stains.

Steam Like A Pro

Steaming a wedding dress is generally the best want to remove wrinkles or creases in a wedding dress or bridesmaid dresses. Steaming is great for synthetic and synthetic blend fabrics like polyester and chiffon. You can also use a steamer on a suit or tuxedo jacket and pants. On the wedding day, you’ll want to hang all of the garments up that you want to steam and work your way through the rack one garment at a time.

Remember, if you need fashion support and help on your wedding day, our team is available for wedding day dressing and bridal styling. We will come to your wedding to ensure that you and everyone in your wedding party and family is photo ready at all times, and that includes steaming everyone’s wedding day garments and your wedding dress.

Using a steamer can be tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be removing wrinkles like a pro. Hold your steamer a few inches away from the wedding dress and don’t press it against the fabric. Steaming can take some time to master the skill, so be sure to be patient with it and let the steam do the work, not you.

Be sure to test out the steamer on a small section in the bottom and back or inside of your wedding dress or garment. Testing will give you some practice and this way, if there are any problems, at least it’s in a spot where no one can see.

Our best tip for using a steamer on the wedding day is to change out the water first and make sure that you’re using clean, new water. If you haven’t used your steamer in a while or you’re borrowing a steamer from a friend or the hotel, the water can be stale or old. This old water can leave a mark on the fabric, which you don’t want on a wedding dress or wedding day garment.

Lastly, never wear the garment and steam at the same time. This is how someone can get burned! It’s always better to take the garment or wedding dress off first before ironing or steaming to avoid anyone getting hurt. It’s better to be late walking down the aisle than to be hurt or injured!

Do Not Steam, Use Your Iron Instead

If your wedding dress or bridesmaid dress is made of silk, taffeta, or natural material, avoid a steamer at all costs. Do not steam silk or taffeta as it can ruin the wedding dress or leave marks that you might not be able to get out.

If your wedding dress is made of silk or taffeta, it is best to use an iron to remove any wrinkles. Use the settings on your iron as a guide and start out low and slow.

Also, start out the iron in the bottom back of the wedding dress in a “test” area so that you can see how the iron will perform first. The last thing you want is a big iron mark or a burn on your wedding dress from an iron that was too hot or had some gunk left on it from the last time it was used.

You’ll also want to use the iron on button-down cotton shirts. Yes, you can steam a shirt, if that’s all that you have, but an iron will go much faster and will give you the fresh, crisp look that you want with a shirt on a wedding day.

Plan Ahead

Factor in prepping your wedding day outfits, wedding dress, and bridesmaid dresses. Most wedding day outfits will need some level of attention, especially if you’ve traveled to your wedding for a destination wedding event.

You should include outfit prep in your day of the wedding timeline and wedding day schedule.

Brides should keep in mind that properly steaming a wedding dress can take up to one hour or more, especially if your wedding dress has a long train.

You don’t want to be late on your wedding day and your dress full of wrinkles!
